GENERAL INFORMATION - Ground Cover Crops

One the biggest problem faced in many plantations, is weeds. A large amount of money, time and resources are spent to keep weeds under control. Some plantations use herbicides to kill weeds. This method is costly and harmful to the environment, and can also be harmful to the cash crop. Without herbicides, plantations require a lot of manpower to keep weeds under control, especially during the rainy season. This is time consuming, costly and could be a headache in terms of human resources.

A perfect solution for this problem is using ground cover crops. It is inexpensive and easily managed. It requires minimum effort, time and resources. Plantations that seeks to be sustainable should consider using ground cover crops, in rotation or along side of the cash crop.

Ground cover crops have many advantages:

  • Weed suppression.
  • Prevent soil erosion
  • Improve soil structure
  • Improve water infiltration
  • Provide humus to soil
  • Reduce harmful insects and diseases.
  • Improve fertility.  If a legume is used, there is an additional benefit of nitrogen to the main crop.
