Tissue Culture Teak

The expected high returns of teak logs during harvest depend greatly on timber volume and quality. With tissue culture technique, higher timber volume can be expected as compared to those grown from seeds. The uniformity of "high quality" teak logs can also be achieved throughout the plantation.

Other leading advantages of tissue culture teaks versus teaks grown from seeds are as follow:

  • Uniformity: T.C. teaks have uniformity of 80% or more, while teaks grown from seeds have uniformity of 20% or less. High uniformity helps to ease the management of the plantations.
  • Excellent form: Mother teak trees used for propagating T.C. teaks have been pre-selected - the trunks are straight and have no branches (self-pruning). The crown is less than 1/3 of the total height. Good forms provide more wood volume at harvest.
  • No Germination Process: T.C. teaks do not require germination process. Germination yield is remarkably low when using seeds, and an ideal environment for germination must be created. Germination period typically lasts 15 - 50 days.
